To understand why a war broke out, a historian must first understand the customs, beliefs, and way of life of every people involved.

   The Histories

The history of a war begins with understanding the peoples involved, not just the battles.

Herodotus traveled through Egypt, Persia, and Greece, recording customs, myths, and local stories before writing about the Greco-Persian Wars. Many called him the father of history precisely because he was never satisfied with just battles and dates — he wanted to understand the people behind events.
