Freedom survives through respect for laws we gave ourselves, not through fear.
Tocqueville notices a paradox: a free people is the most exposed to chaos, because nobody coerces it from above. If citizens do not respect common rules, the only alternative left is force, which means the end of liberty. Respect for law is not submission but collective self-discipline: you fulfill your obligations even when nobody is watching. A simple example is stopping at a red light at three in the morning on an empty street, or paying taxes without fear of audit.
Why it matters In debates about civic culture and public order, the line reminds us that liberty is lost not only through tyranny but also through contempt for shared rules.
