“There are no other numbers, colors, or sounds than those nature gives.”Anton Cehov · Scrisori · 1900 · lui Suvorin, 1895
Authentic emotion is born from the real detail, not from manufactured pathos.
Chekhov rejects artifice and empty rhetoric: the writer may not invent a parallel reality, only observe with precision the numbers, colors, and sounds of the given world. A real detail — an old horse, a particular weather — produces genuine emotion, while abstractions and artificially triggered pathos falsify it. Truthful observation is art's only legitimate source.
Why it matters Applicable wherever truth is claimed: in reporting, presentations, and conversation, concrete verifiable details carry more force than grand generalizations.
