“A free man always acts honestly, not deceptively.”Baruch Spinoza · Etica · 1677 · Partea a IV-a, propoziția 72
Lying is not a weapon but a symptom: whoever lies is already fear's servant.
In Spinoza's logic, freedom means acting from understanding, not from fear. A lie is a survival tactic of someone afraid of the truth's consequences. Whoever grasps the real situation can call things by their name and stays strong. A negotiator who hides a product's flaw wins one sale but loses the position from which he can act freely.
Why it matters A practical test: if you feel the urge to lie, you are in fact constrained by fear, not free.
