“In a civilized country, property is sacred.”Edmund Burke · Reflecții asupra Revoluției din Franța · 1790 · paragraful 57

The security of property is the foundation upon which a society's progress and prosperity are built.

Burke considers property rights not a mere legal arrangement, but a fundamental principle of social order. Without the security that what you have will not be taken arbitrarily, people do not invest, work, or innovate. For example, in countries with political instability or judicial corruption, property is insecure and the economy stagnates.

Burke does not see property as just a material good. He considers it an extension of the person and their labor. When the state respects it, people feel safe to build for the long term. For example, a small farmer who knows his land will not be confiscated will invest in irrigation and perennial crops. This trust creates social stability. But what about those who own no property?

Why it matters Today, this principle is essential for understanding why the rule of law and property protection are conditions for prosperity.
