The devil we describe wears our own face, not his.
The line comes from Ivan Karamazov's conversation with the devil, but its claim concerns humanity at large. If evil has no external source, then the imagination that conjures dark figures belongs to us. Our projections of demons reveal our own cruelties, greed, and vanity. Whoever paints an enemy as a monster is really drawing a self-portrait of fear. Propaganda that turns an adversary into pure evil says more about its makers than about its target.
Why it matters It helps someone examine their own projections: the enemy they describe most ugly may mirror their own dark side rather than the other person's reality.
