Everyone carries memories in three circles: ones for close friends, ones kept only for oneself, and ones one dares not even admit.

Every man has reminiscences which he would not tell to everything, but only to his friends. He has other matters in his mind which he would not reveal even to his friends, but only to himself in secret. But there are other things in a man, which he is afraid to tell even to himself.Feodor Dostoievski · Însemnări din subterană · 1864 · Partea I, capitolul 11

Some memories you dare not confess even to yourself, yet they stay active.

Intimacy comes in three tiers. The first is spoken, the second is silent, the third is denied even before the mirror. Dostoevsky suggests our identity has a core that consciousness itself cannot touch without fear. The psychological mechanism is repression: what is too shameful or painful gets buried, yet stays active. Someone may talk freely about childhood, keep certain youthful deeds silent, and never admit their real envy or cruelty.

Why it mattersIt helps you understand that other people's silence is not necessarily distrust, but sometimes a defense against something they themselves cannot face.
