“Philosophy triumphs over past and future evils, but present evils triumph over philosophy.”François de La Rochefoucauld · Maxime · 1665 · Maxima 22
Reason can analyze past and future pain, but present pain overwhelms it.
La Rochefoucauld shows that philosophy helps us view past pains or future fears with detachment, but in the face of immediate pain, all wisdom collapses. For example, you can calmly meditate on death, but when a loved one dies, no philosophical thought consoles you in the moment.
Why it matters It reminds us not to rely solely on reason in moments of crisis, but to accept that pain has its own logic.
