The sentence sounds like a warning but is in fact an injunction: the point of no return is not to be avoided but reached, because only beyond it does transformation become possible. Kafka suggests we linger too long in the safe zone of reversibility, where everything can be undone and so nothing truly happens. Only when the bridges are burned — a final departure, a confession, an irreversible renunciation — does the real journey begin. Whoever leaves a city and an old self for good knows that only then did it start.
Why it matters It speaks to anyone postponing big decisions by keeping an escape route: sometimes the only progress is crossing the threshold past which you cannot turn back.
