Self-ignorance and ignorance of others go hand in hand: you cannot read strangers with an instrument you do not know.

He who understands his own character least, understands that of others least.Georg Christoph Lichtenberg · Caietele de însemnări · 1799 · Caietul K, însemnarea 31

Self-knowledge is the dictionary you translate people with; without it, every reading is wrong.

Lichtenberg suggests that understanding others works by analogy: we decode people using our own motives, fears, and weaknesses as a dictionary. If the dictionary is incomplete, the translation is wrong. The mechanism is projection: someone blind to their own vanity sees it only in others, exaggerated. A boss who will not admit his jealousy accuses employees of hidden ambition. Self-knowledge thus becomes a technical precondition for empathy.

Why it mattersUseful in relationships and management: before judging someone, ask which part of yourself you are reading in them.
