The road doesn't change when you walk it backwards — only the name you give it does.
Heraclitus is pointing at the unity of opposites: a road is called 'up' or 'down' only relative to the traveler's direction, not in itself. The path that climbs out of the valley descends from the summit, so its identity never changes, only the perspective on it. A worker ending a night shift and one starting it pass through the same gate, moving in opposite senses. Contraries do not exclude each other; they define each other.
Why it matters It helps you see that failure and success, departure and return, are often the same process viewed from different angles, which calms the panic around change.
