Creangă describes how an old tree in the yard transformed, in children's eyes, into a magical realm. The mechanism is childhood imagination: children have the ability to invest ordinary objects with fantastic meanings. Without sophisticated toys, they created a 'kingdom' where anything was possible. For example, under that tree, they could be kings, soldiers, or explorers, and branches became castles or ships.
