“And yet, that simple and happy life of childhood seems to me now the most beautiful memory.”Ion Creangă · Amintiri din copilărie · 1881 · partea I

The simple and happy life of childhood remains the most beautiful memory.

Creangă looks back with nostalgia at childhood, not because it was problem-free, but because its simplicity gave it an authenticity that adult life loses. A child enjoys small things—a game, a story, a walk—without weighing them. The adult, by contrast, complicates everything with worries and calculations.

Creangă does not idealize childhood as a perfect time. He sees it as a time of unspoiled curiosity. When a child discovers a puddle, they do not calculate if they will get dirty. They jump right in, fascinated by how the water moves. An adult would hesitate, thinking about clothes or wasted time. This loss of spontaneity is what makes the memory of childhood shine so brightly. It shows us what we left behind on the road to adulthood.

Why it matters It helps us value simple moments and not let routine steal our ability to enjoy them.
