Talent without character is a perverse and destructive force.
Vauvenargues shows that talent without nobility of soul becomes dangerous. A person with remarkable abilities but who is petty, selfish, or lacks empathy can do much harm. Intelligence placed in the service of malice or pride is more destructive than mediocrity. A skillful politician who uses manipulation to gain power illustrates this danger.
