“Passions are the geniuses of action.”Luc de Vauvenargues · Reflecții și maxime · 1746 · Maxima 1
Reason calculates, but passion is what decides and sets us moving.
Vauvenargues inverts a classical idea: reason calculates and compares, but it never decides alone. Without a strong emotion — ambition, pride, love, anger — plans stay on paper. Passion is the "genius" because it does what calculation cannot: it selects what matters and supplies the energy to pursue it. Someone desperate to lift their family out of poverty finds solutions a perfectly balanced analyst would never see.
Why it matters When you postpone a big decision waiting for the "right moment," remember the engine is desire, not perfect analysis.
