“The inner book of unknown signs which we have read in passing, without knowing them, is the only book that truly belongs to us.”Marcel Proust · În căutarea timpului pierdut · 1913 · Vol. VI, „Timpul regăsit
Your true book is written from half-understood signs, not from imagination.
Proust believed life hands us signs — sensations, memories, passing encounters — that we read without ever decoding them. Writing is not copying the world but returning to those clues and finally giving them meaning, always after the fact. The mechanism is involuntary memory: a taste or a smell unearths a past consciousness never registered. Someone who notes what a certain smell of rain once stirred in them produces a book no one else could ever write.
Why it matters It matters to anyone keeping a journal or hoping to write: the raw material is not imagination but a half-understood life waiting to be deciphered.
