The soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts.Marcus Aurelius · Gânduri către sine · 180 · Gânduri către sine, Cartea V, 16

Your soul is dyed the color of the thoughts you nurture.

The aphorism uses a visual metaphor: the soul absorbs the shade of thoughts, like fabric takes dye. If you frequently think with resentment, envy, or fear, your soul takes on that color. If you choose thoughts of gratitude or calm, they color you differently. For instance, someone who mentally repeats 'I'm not good enough' will live in anxiety, while a thought like 'I do what I can' brings a brighter hue.

Why it mattersIt encourages you to monitor your repetitive thoughts, because they determine your long-term well-being.
