What goes unrecorded disappears entirely: history, born of truth, is the only force that saves facts from being devoured by time.
Cervantes thinks of history as a struggle for preservation. Time erases deeds, oblivion devours them, and history — written from truth — is the only force that can save them, hence its title as time's rival. The mechanism is transmission: an unrecorded deed vanishes completely. An example: battles no one wrote about survive today only as nameless graves, while the chronicled ones go on living.
The card says history saves deeds from time. The next step: someone must choose what deserves saving. The chronicler is not just a keeper, but a filter. He decides which deeds enter the page and which stay outside, condemned to oblivion. So the fight against time hides a second fight: the one with his own subjectivity. Think of the family photo box: grandma chose what to keep, the rest got thrown away. What was called history was, in fact, a selection. And if every history is a selection, the question becomes: who has the right to choose what survives?
