Seneca dismantles the illusion of ownership: house, money, even body and loved ones can be taken at any moment, so none of them is fully ours. The one good nature has entrusted to us is time, and it is precisely the one we waste most. The mechanism is that time passes regardless of our will, and how we spend it defines a life more surely than any possession. A person who gives years to a job that despises him or to empty entertainment loses the only thing he cannot get back.
