A true book must shatter the inner numbness and awaken us to life.

Kafka is not talking about books that entertain or inform, but about those that strike directly at the frozen part of the soul – that numb area shaped by routine, conformity, or fear. Such a book acts like an axe: it is not comfortable, but violent in a creative sense. For instance, you read a sentence that makes you put the book down and stare into space for minutes, because something inside you has broken open.

A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.

In absolute silence and solitude, the world reveals itself on its own.

Kafka describes a path to knowledge that does not involve external movement, but total immobility. You do not need to seek, listen, or even actively wait; just be present, silent, and solitary. In this apparent void, the world begins to reveal itself on its own. An example: sit on a chair without your phone, without a book, without intentional thoughts, and after a while you notice details of the room or sensations you would normally ignore.

You need not leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait. Do not even wait, be quite still and solitary.
