One's native language is the true homeland, and geographical borders are merely a map.
Cioran challenges the idea that national belonging is about territory. For him, language shapes inner reality more deeply than any map. An exile who keeps his language remains at home; a citizen who no longer speaks his country's language becomes a foreigner. A Romanian who moves to France and speaks only French no longer truly lives in Romania, even if his passport says otherwise.
“We do not inhabit a country, we inhabit a language. That is our homeland, and no other.”
