All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.Blaise Pascal · Cugetări · 1670 · Cugetări, Fragmentul 139

Unhappiness stems from fleeing quiet, which would reveal our inner void.

Pascal believes people flee silence because it reveals their inner emptiness. When we cannot bear ourselves alone, we seek distractions: work, entertainment, chatter. The mechanism is avoidance: agitation hides our unease. An example: someone who checks their phone at every free moment, afraid to face silence.

Why it mattersIt warns us that addiction to external stimuli prevents us from knowing ourselves and solving our inner problems.
