For Confucius, unease comes from two sources: a guilty conscience and attachment to outcomes. The person who acts rightly does not fear others' judgment, and the one unattached to gain does not tremble at loss. Calm is not luck but the product of integrity. An official who refuses a bribe sleeps soundly, while the one who took it triple-checks every email.
Confucius moves anxiety from circumstances into character, but the next step is practical: integrity is not just a shield, it is an energy saver. Whoever hides something constantly spends attention on managing appearances. Whoever hides nothing spends that same energy on real things. Think of a colleague who lied about a missed deadline: he remembers what he told whom, builds versions. The colleague who admitted the mistake right away has already moved on.
