Philosophy becomes useless when it loses touch with authentic human suffering.

I broke with philosophy the moment it became impossible to discover in Kant any human weakness, any authentic accent of sadness.Emil Cioran · Despre neajunsul de a te fi născut · 1973 · Despre neajunsul de a te fi născut, Fragmente despre filozofie

Philosophy becomes sterile and worthless when it loses its connection with authentic human suffering.

Cioran rejects academic philosophy, represented by Kant, because it is too clean, too rational. He looks in thinkers for accents of sadness, weakness, humanity. A philosopher who shows no emotional crack seems false to him. For example, a perfectly constructed philosophical system that says nothing about the pain of existence is, for Cioran, an empty edifice.

Why it mattersIt encourages us to seek in ideas not just logical coherence, but also the echo of real experiences, including suffering.
