Choosing your master isn't freedom: you change domination's face, not the balance of power.
La Boétie attacks the illusion that popular sovereignty is exhausted in voting. If the only power left is to name whoever will command you, you have changed the face of rule, not the balance of power. The mechanism is the confusion between participation and real power: the legitimacy granted by election can even strengthen servitude. A citizen who votes every four years but has no say in the daily decisions that concern them lives precisely this condition.
Why it matters It raises useful questions for anyone who mistakes periodic voting for real control over their own life.
