Sonya does not merely ask Raskolnikov to admit the deed; she demands he confess it before everyone and bow to the earth he has defiled. The gesture is a mechanism of moral healing: guilt lived in secret corrodes, and only naming it aloud pulls it out of hiding and submits it to real judgment. Kissing the earth means accepting the broken bond with people and the world, the first step toward being taken back.
