Love must be practiced toward all of creation, including small things, as training for the heart.

Love every leaf, every ray of God's light, love the animals, love the plants, love each thing.Feodor Dostoievski · Frații Karamazov · 1880 · Cartea VI, capitolul 3, «Cuvintele bătrânului Zosima despre Dumnezeu și despre robii lui

Love is a muscle, not a gift: train it on small things so it survives people.

Zosima's advice treats love as a discipline, not a spontaneous feeling. Loving people is hard because people wound; so you begin with undefended things — leaves, animals, light — where no resentment blocks you. Practiced this way, love becomes a reflex that survives disappointment. Whoever loves only when others deserve it stays hostage to them; whoever practices unconditional love keeps it even when hurt. It is a spiritual technique for expanding one's emotional capacity.

Why it mattersA real daily exercise: attention and care toward small things train the patience needed for people who are hard to love.
