Real love is measured in boring deeds, not beautiful dreams.
Dostoevsky distinguishes two ways of loving: in dreams, love is ideal, swift, frictionless; in reality it means patience, labor, and contact with difficult people who do not respond as we wish. It is harsh because it demands staying beside someone even when the pleasure is gone. Anyone who dreams of helping "humanity" yet is irritated by an everyday neighbor lives exactly the contrast described.
Why it matters A useful warning against romantic idealism: love is measured not by enthusiasm but by perseverance in small, tedious deeds.
