Consciousness is born not from pleasure but from pain: only suffering forces you to ask who you are.

Suffering is the sole origin of consciousness.Feodor Dostoievski · Însemnări din subterană · 1864 · Partea I, capitolul 6

Pain tears you out of autopilot and puts you face to face with yourself.

A person who lives comfortably has no reason to examine himself; pain tears him out of his routines and confronts him with himself. The mechanism is simple: suffering breaks the flow of unexamined life and creates the distance from which we can see ourselves. Dostoevsky's underground man prefers the pain of consciousness to the comfort of unconsciousness, because only that way does he remain human. A hard diagnosis or a loss often tells people more about themselves than years of calm.

Why it mattersSomeone going through a crisis can see it not just as a loss, but as the source of self-knowledge no happy period would have given them.
