When philosophers condemn wealth, it may simply be envy dressed up as morality.
La Rochefoucauld suspects that contempt for money is often a mask for envy or powerlessness. A philosopher who preaches voluntary poverty but has never had the chance to be rich may actually be justifying their own failure. For example, a teacher who condemns luxury but eagerly accepts a generous grant contradicts themselves.
Why it matters It warns us not to confuse moral convictions with personal resentments, especially in debates about money and power.
