The destination exists, but the path to it does not — no method guarantees meaning.
The aphorism separates two things we usually confuse: the existence of meaning and knowing how to reach it. Kafka does not deny the destination; what is harsh is the absence of a path. Religion promises methods, philosophy offers systems, but he sees them as maps that do not match the terrain. The truth lies in common experience: nobody arrives at a fulfilled life by following someone else's steps. A young person can do everything they were told — school, work, rules — and still feel the goal stays out of reach.
