Belief in an indestructible inner core is a necessary condition for life.
Kafka is not speaking of God but of an inner certainty. Without the conviction that there is an indestructible core within us—dignity, essence, worth—life becomes unbearable. For example, an artist who loses everything can still create if they remain convinced that their talent is indestructible.
