Self-knowledge is not received but paid for: the spirit grows by cutting into its own life.
Nietzsche refuses to see spirit as something apart from life, a pure observer. Spirit is life turned on itself: it examines, denies and wounds itself in order to understand. The mechanism is that deep knowledge comes not from comfort but from the self-inflicted wound of self-examination: whoever asks himself painful questions learns what the evader never learns. A person who admits his own cowardice or envy, instead of hiding them, comes out of the operation with knowledge no one else could have given him.
Why it matters For anyone avoiding introspection out of fear: lucid suffering is the price of self-knowledge, not an accident.
