When values handed down from above die, man becomes the sole bearer of meaning.
Zarathustra announces not just a loss but a task: if gods no longer uphold values, someone must carry them into the future. The Overman is the name of this human, self-realized ideal that waits for no divine sanction. The mechanism is substitution: the void left by the old foundation demands a new bearer of meaning, and that bearer can only be man himself. A person who, after losing his inherited faith, consciously chooses which principles to defend, lives exactly the transition demanded here.
