“And here I am now, old, half-blind, but with a heart just as young as if I were a child.”Ion Creangă · Amintiri din copilărie · 1881 · partea I
The body ages, but the heart can stay young through preserved memories and emotions.
Creangă distinguishes between body and spirit. Though the body ages and his sight deteriorates ('half-blind'), he feels his inner essence, the heart, has remained unchanged. The mechanism is affective memory: childhood memories and emotions can persist intact beyond age. For example, an old man playing with grandchildren can relive the pure joy of childhood.
Creangă notes that physical aging does not necessarily alter the soul. When an adult bends down to pick a flower by the roadside, just as they did in childhood, they rediscover the same curiosity. This continuity of spirit shows us that age is just a number for the heart.
Why it matters It encourages us to keep alive the curiosity and joy of childhood, regardless of age.
