The merit isn't inventing truth, but rethinking it until it becomes yours.
Goethe dismantles here the obsession with absolute originality. The mechanism is that human experience is limited and recurrent: the same situations, the same dilemmas have repeated for millennia, so someone has already formulated them best. The difference is not made in inventing but in assimilating: a truth read remains foreign until you rethink it through your own experience. A young man discovering his career doubts were described two centuries ago is not diminished but freed: he can work with the truth, not with the vanity of discovery.
