Individuality is the same thing with development, and... it is only the cultivation of individuality which produces, or can produce, well-developed human beings.John Stuart Mill · Despre libertate · 1859 · capitolul III

Authentic human development is achieved only through cultivating individuality, not conformity.

Mill believes that being a developed person means expressing your uniqueness, not conforming. A society that encourages individuality produces creative, autonomous, and responsible people. In contrast, conformism leads to stagnation and mediocrity. For example, an education system that encourages critical thinking and individual passions forms more capable adults than one that imposes uniformity.
