Those who don't fight for position reach everywhere, like water carving stone.
Water is Daoism's central image because it combines two traits: universal usefulness and non-resistance. It flows to the low places people despise, and precisely for that reason it reaches everywhere. The mechanism is efficient non-action: whoever does not fight for position wastes no energy on conflict and, over time, even shapes the stone. An example: a colleague who helps everyone without competing for credit becomes, within a few years, the most influential person in the firm.
Why it matters It counters competitive culture: lasting influence comes from benefiting others without struggle, not from domination.
