Know others and you can navigate the world; know yourself and no one rules you.
The hierarchy is deliberate. Someone who reads people well can navigate society, but remains dependent on the outside; whoever sees his own motives, limits, and illusions can no longer be ruled by them. Judging others is easier than examining yourself, because self-examination offers nowhere to hide. A man who understands his colleagues perfectly but refuses to see that his rivalry comes from fear stays a slave to that fear.
Why it matters In a world that prizes reading other people, the line reminds us that diagnosing ourselves is the hard and decisive part. It applies to leadership, therapy, and life decisions.
