Emptiness is not lack, but the womb from which everything is born.
Lao Zi thinks of usefulness through emptiness. A pot is useful for the space inside it, a door for its opening, a room for the void it encloses. The being of a thing always includes an absence that makes it work. Non-being is not a negative nothing but the ground from which forms arise, the way silence makes sound possible. A pause in a conversation, for instance, is what lets a thought crystallize.
Why it matters Today the idea defends the gaps in our lives: unplanned time, silence, unused space. Whoever fills them frantically loses the very place where new things are born.
