I understood that all these materials for a literary work were my past life, my life which did not seem to me truly lived except at the moment when I created it.Marcel Proust · În căutarea timpului pierdut · 1913 · Volumul VI, „Timpul regăsit”, partea „La Guermantes

A life lived passively isn't yet yours; only when you turn it into creation does it truly become yours.

Proust discovers that the raw material of his work is his own life, but life lived passively is not yet life. Only when experience is worked through, understood and transfigured by art does it truly become ours. The mechanism is elaboration: living something differs from grasping it. A loss feels real only when you can tell it; suffering gains meaning only once it becomes words or images you can hold.

Why it mattersIt justifies writing, journaling or art as ways of actually owning your own biography.
