Happiness depends on our judgments, not on acquisitions.

Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.Marcus Aurelius · Gânduri către sine · 180 · Cartea VII, 67

It is not things that hurt you, but the judgment you make about them.

For an emperor who had everything, Marcus Aurelius found that possessions do not quiet the mind. Our suffering comes not from things but from the opinion we form about them: a loss hurts only as long as we judge it a disaster. Whoever trains their way of thinking becomes less dependent on circumstances, and that is the one wealth no one can take away.

Why it mattersAn antidote to accumulation culture: fewer things, more clarity about what matters.
