You cannot control what happens to you, but you can always control how you react — and that is where your real power lies.

“If thou art pained by any external thing, it is not this thing that disturbs thee, but thy own judgment about it.”Marcus Aurelius · Meditations · 180

True power lies in choosing your own reaction, not in the events surrounding you.

Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor, but he wrote his thoughts as private notes to himself, never meant for publication. He kept repeating that bad weather, rude people, or bad luck cannot touch his inner peace if he chooses how to respond. Real power lies in choosing your reaction.

When a colleague speaks to you harshly, your first impulse is to feel offended. Marcus Aurelius would ask: what actually hurts you? Not his words, but the story you tell yourself about them. If you choose to see only a tired person having a bad day, your reaction changes. The event does not control you; your interpretation does. That is where your inner freedom begins. The next step is to practice this conscious choice, even in small situations.

Why it matters His ideas underlie cognitive behavioral therapy, widely used by psychologists today.
