“You are but a little flesh and a breath, and the ruler of both.”Marcus Aurelius · Gânduri către sine · 180 · Cartea II, 2
Body and breath decay, but the commander within stays free to choose.
Marcus Aurelius breaks a human being into three layers: the flesh, the breath that keeps it running, and the mind that commands both. The mechanism is an inventory of the self: once you list your parts, there is little left to boast about and little to fear. The body is fragile, the breath is short, but the commander stays free to decide. A man sick in bed can lose strength and breath, yet still choose his attitude.
Why it matters It helps anyone overwhelmed by illness, aging, or loss, because it separates what decays from what can still remain in charge.
