The genuine politician needs three virtues together: inner fire, ownership of the consequences of one's acts, and a realistic sense of proportion.

“Three qualities, above all, are decisive for the politician: passion, a feeling of responsibility, and a sense of proportion.”Max Weber · Politica, o vocație · 1919 · Politica, o vocație, paragraful despre calitățile politicianului

Passion without responsibility turns fanatic, and without measure destructive; the true politician holds all three together.

Weber sketches the political man as a system of balances. Passion alone becomes fanaticism or vanity; responsibility alone becomes cowardly careerism; a sense of proportion alone becomes cold technocracy. The three correct one another: passion supplies energy, responsibility directs it toward real consequences, and proportion keeps it from turning destructive. A minister who ardently wants a reform but calculates what the population will suffer and what parliament can pass embodies all three.

Weber does not ask for the three virtues one at a time, but all at once, because each one goes bad on its own. Passion without responsibility burns whatever it touches. Responsibility without passion becomes mere fear of making mistakes. A sense of proportion without fire decides nothing. Think of a parent who wants to change the school cafeteria: with only indignation, they fight everyone and lose. With only caution, they sign petitions and stay silent. With only calm, they accept any compromise. Something new appears only when they hold all three together. The idea is worth carrying further: why is it so hard to have all three at once, and what exactly pulls each one down?

Why it matters A practical test for any leader, from mayor to manager: ask whether you have all three qualities, not just enthusiasm.
