Conversation is the best workout for the mind.

The most useful and natural exercise of our mind is, in my opinion, conversation.Michel de Montaigne · Eseuri · 1580 · III, 8

The mind sharpens in dialogue: someone who disagrees helps you more than someone who confirms what you know.

Montaigne, the master of dialogue with himself through essays, saw in talking with someone else a harder test: the interlocutor interrupts, contradicts, and forces you to clarify your thoughts on the spot. The mechanism is friction: reading confirms what you already think, while conversation surprises you and makes you improvise, correct, listen. An honest argument with a friend who disagrees clarifies your own position faster than an hour of solitary reading.

Why it mattersIt reminds us that thinking grows in real dialogue, not just content consumption; an argument for meeting face to face.
