“When a people no longer has history, when it forgets the past, it loses the unity of national consciousness.”Mihai Eminescu · Publicistică · 1880 · Curierul de Iași, 12 iunie 1880

The collective memory of the past is the foundation of national cohesion and identity.

Eminescu speaks of memory as the foundation of collective identity. Without knowledge of history, a community becomes a mere group of individuals with no deep bonds. For instance, a young person who does not know why December 1st is celebrated will not feel belonging to the same nation as their grandparent.

Eminescu warns that forgetting history turns citizens into strangers to each other. When a young person no longer knows why his ancestors fought in 1848, he becomes indifferent to their sacrifices. This indifference weakens mutual trust and social solidarity. Without this bond, the community crumbles into individual interests.

Why it matters In an age of globalization and fleeting information, this thought reminds us that historical education is not a luxury but a condition for cultural survival.
