“Man's greatest enemy is laziness.”Nicolae Iorga · Cugetări · 1911 · II. Despre caracter

The greatest enemy is internal laziness, not external threats.

Iorga believes that real threats come not from outside—wars, poverty, or enemies—but from our own inertia. Laziness prevents us from acting, thinking, and growing. A student who doesn't study for an exam is defeated not by the subject's difficulty, but by their own laziness. It is the silent enemy that sabotages us every time we choose comfort over effort.

Laziness steals more than time. It also steals our confidence that we can do things differently. When we put off a difficult talk with a friend, we are not afraid of their reaction. We are afraid of the effort to start it. Admitting this is the first step to no longer being slaves to comfort.

Why it matters It helps us identify the true source of our failures: not circumstances, but lack of action. It motivates us to fight our own inertia instead of blaming others.
