Social indifference is a deeper death than criticism.
Wilde ironizes society's thirst for fame: even being spoken ill of is preferable to absolute silence. The mechanism is social recognition: being a topic of conversation means you exist in others' eyes, while not being mentioned at all makes you invisible. For example, a controversial celebrity is more relevant than a genius living in obscurity.
Why it matters It shows how much social attention matters, but also how superficial it can be.
