“Love me not because I am beautiful, but make me beautiful by thy love.”Rabindranath Tagore · Păsări răzlețe · 1916 · 6
True love does not receive beauty, but produces it.
Tagore reverses the usual logic of love: beauty does not attract love, but love transforms the beloved, making them beautiful. The mechanism is the ennobling gaze: when you truly love, you discover or even create qualities others cannot see. For example, a parent sees their child as the most beautiful in the world, not because the child is perfect, but because love makes them so.
Why it matters It teaches us that love is not a reaction to ready-made qualities but a creative act.
